1969 was a year giants rocked the earth, and they wanted big amps. By that point in history, rock music was the baddest man in the whole damn town. Stadiums and outdoor festivals was where the action was—Madison Square Garden for chrissakes. Fifty watts just wasn't enough to move that chick in the 61st row in her hand-embroidered bellbottoms. It wasn't as if nobody was filling the void—witness the stacks of Marshalls, mountains of Hiwatts, and truckloads of Dual Showmans doing more to promote tinnitus in a single generation since WWII. Only In America Ampeg needed to compete. The team of amp designer Bill Hughes and Roger Cox—with input from Bob Rufkahr and Dan Armstrong—set about to create what Cox referred to as "the biggest, nastiest bass amplifier the world had ever seen." Using the same sort of madness that drove Dr. Frankenstein, the team came up with a 300-watt all-tube phantasmagoria they called the Super Vacuum Tube—or SVT, to save on vowels. To fully grasp the monstrosity of their creation, the SVT's 300-watt output stomped the deafening 200-watt Marshall Major by a full 100-watts! Unveiled at the 1969 NAMM show in Chicago, the SVT head alone weighed 95 lbs and contained fourteen tubes, six of which were massive 6146 power tubes. To heat all those tubes, massive transformers with magnetic fields powerful enough to cause genetic mutations were necessary. And what kind of speakers were able to handle all that power? Ignaz Bösendorfer the most famous of all Austrian piano builders took control of the Joseph Brodmann piano workshops which was then considered to be the most innovative and modern piano factory in Europe and therefore the world. Joseph Brodmann was born in 1763 in Deuna/Eichsfeld (today Germany, Thüringen). As a young man, he came to Vienna and became the apprentice of the well known piano builder Frederick Hoffman. By this time, Vienna had already been established as the centre of the musical world influenced by the music of Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert who all lived during his lifetime. Joseph Brodmann was one of the first and best known piano designers and craftsman of his time. In 1800, in the Lexicon of Musicians he was listed as “Joseph Brodmann - instrument maker, excelled in constructing horizontal fortepianos of solid finish“. In 1805 he was registered in the Court and State record department as an Organ and Piano maker. His contribution to and inventions for piano design and piano making laid the groundwork for his most talented apprentice, Ignaz Bösendorfer whose pianos are still considered today by many as the finest pianos in the world.Joseph Brodmann was best known for his development work on piano soundboards. In the late 1970s, electronics gurus Larry Hartke and Ron Lorman began tinkering with the first prototype aluminum cone drivers. It wasn’t until 1980 that they released their first products, an aluminum cone, free edge tweeter and a two-way bookshelf system with an eight-inch aluminum woofer, under the Hartke name. In 1984, while Lorman was working as a stage manager and engineer at New York’s famous Bottom Line Club, the two crafted the first aluminum bass speaker cones into one of Jaco Pastorius’ old 810 cabinets. Only that single cabinet was made and shared by a lot of the players on the scene. When Pastorius tried out the new cabinet, the solid, coherent low end and the extended frequency range of the mids and highs produced by the aluminum cones inspired him. As a result, Pastorius began using the cabinet at all of his shows. By 1985, the word had spread about the sound of Pastorius’s 810 and Hartke began mass production of its first aluminum cone bass cabinet, a 4 x 10” module dubbed the 410XL. Eventually, Hartke developed an entire line of XL cabinets, including the 115XL, 210XL, 410XL, 4.5XL and 810XL, which have been played on stages around the world by players like Pastorius, Marcus Miller, Darryl Jones, Jack Bruce, Will Lee, Garry Tallent and many others. While most of these models are still in production, that first Hartke/Jaco 810 now resides in the window at Hartke’s 48th Street Bass Lounge in New York City. Fast forward to 2005. At Madison Square Garden, Jack Bruce reunited with fellow Cream members Eric Clapton and Ginger Baker for the first time in nearly 30 years. Bruce played through a pair of Hartke’s traditional paper cone cabinets, and a classic 410XL aluminum cabinet. After the show, Hartke began to find that, like Bruce, many Hartke artists liked playing aluminum cabinets alongside traditional paper cone cabinets. Hartke engineers began working on fusing the aluminum cones with traditional paper cones. The result was the HyDrive Series. Hartke’s HyDrive Bass Cabinets have become the basis for the sound that world-class musicians like Victor Wooten, Nate Watts, David Ellefson, Frank Bello, Stu Hamm and many others rely on night after night. fter being demobbed following the war, in 1947, and having sailed on HMS Formidable as an in-flight photographer, Victor Graham Mathews started a photographic business in Bank Street, Ashford, Kent, called Photocraft. He married Mary and briefly moved the business to Hythe before returning to Ashford in 1950, moving both the business and home into 40 High Street. In 1952, Victor & Mary proudly and faithfully launched their first son Geoffrey and the sounds of infancy rang out in the upper flat above the business. Four years later Geoffrey was presented with a brother named Philip and the first true sounds of stereo childhood were born. This was quickly followed by surround sound echoing through the fabric of the building and two attentive parents made the equation quadraphonic. Today, Soundcraft maintains its position at the leading edge of Hifi innovation, being one of the best centres of new Digital music technology in the UK. We also design bespoke installations, giving our customers home entertainment tailored to their every need. Vic Firth was born June 2, 1930, in Winchester, Massachusetts.[4] He was raised in Maine by parents Everett E. and Rosemary Firth. Son of a successful trumpet player, he started learning the cornet from the age of four, turning over to percussion at an older age, as well as learning to play the trombone, clarinet, piano, and studying music arrangement. When he reached high school, he was a full time percussionist, creating an 18-piece band at the age of 16. He played a variety of percussion instruments such as vibraphone, timpani and the drum set.
